A sequel to 2008 film Bhoothnath, features Amitabh Bachchan as Bhoothnath in Bhoothnath Returns, the ghost who is mocked by everyone when he enters the Bhoothworld. He is questioned about his abilities as a ghost as he could not even scare a child when he was on earth.
Bhoothnath is handed a token which will enable him to get life as a human being again on this earth. The only problem is that he has to wait for a long, long time. As per Hindu religion, a person after his death, get to live in any form such as an insect or ant or something that sort. But Bhoothnath was to live again as a human being and thats why the long waiting period.
Humiliated and tired of the mockery in the Bhoothworld, Bhoothnath requests the incharge of that world to give him one more chance to come to earth as a ghost and he promises that he would be successful in scaring some children, and clear out the mockery he faces in the ghost world.
After persuasion, he gets a chance to complete his unfinished task as a ghost and so Bhoothnath comes to earth again. This time he lands in Dharavi area, a slum in Mumbai. Unfortunately for him, a boy – Akhrot (Parth Bhalerao) can see him, not the other kids. No one around, not even Akhrot’s mother (Usha Jadhav) can see Bhoothnath.
While interacting with Akhrot, Bhoothnath gets to know the state of affairs in our country. There is poverty all around, garbage piled up, no water supply, the poor state of roads in the city and no one in the Municipal Corporation or the administration or even the policitians are bothered about it. There is corruption all around, scams, rapes, dacoity and nothing is being done about it.
It is the Aam aadmi (the citizens) who face these problems in their daily life. Akhrot suggests that Bhoothnath stand for the upcoming elections and get the system cleaned up. Initially Bhoothnath isn’t convinced, eventually he understood and felt the frustration of the local citizens, and finally gives in. He feels the need to change the system which would be required for making their lifestyle better.
They meet an upright lawyer (Sanjay Mishra) who guides them through the paper work and legalities for Bhoothnath to file his papers as a candidate for the elections. Incidentally his opponent is the local don-cum-politician (Boman Irani) and here on comes laughs, emitions, comedy and battle of wits between Bhoothnath and the local don.
Amitabh Bachchan as Bhoothnath is perfectly cast. No other actor in the present times could do the character better. Parth Bhalerao as the boy Akhrot is awesome and Usha Jadhav as his mother is very natural. Usha Jadhav comes up with an award winning performance. Boman Irani and his side kick Brijendra Kala are fearsome as well as funny.
There are hit numbers in this film – Party To Banti Hai, Har Har Gange and significantly the Party With The Bhoothnath rendered by rage of the nation – Yo Yo Honey Singh.
Bhoothnath returns is fascinating, breezy, captivating and full of pleasurable moments in the first half. Post interval the film is loaded with heavy fundas such as how an eligible politician is to be elected, sermons on governance and the style of living. The message is well-intentioned, however it turns serious with grim turn of events in the latter half. The fun and comedy of the initial part are lacking in the second half.
